What is an “inspiration board” (and what is it not)?
First, what it is not… inspiration is not copying. So an inspiration board is not a collection of things that you want to replicate. It is a compilation of pictures, quotes, color swatches, patterns, text styles, florals, words, etc – anything that relates to or lends itself to the feeling of your project. If you’re putting together a board for a wedding, for example… you don’t have to (and you shouldn’t, actually) include just pictures of weddings. Maybe a picture of a rug has an awesome pattern that you love. Or a picture of a French countryside captures the easygoing elegance you’re looking for. Or a bunch of wildflowers from a gardening website. You’re just collecting a group of elements from which you can find a common thread and establish a theme for your event or brand.
Why do I have to put together an inspiration board?
As you approach your branding or event, it’s a great exercise to put your fingers on the pulse of the project and figure out what you’re looking for. It helps me start a dialogue with you on what you like, don’t like, and the overall theme of your event or brand. It makes sure we’re on the same page before I start designing, which is a HUGE help for both of us!
So, how do I put one together?
1. Go to Pinterest and create an account. It’s easy and it’s free... win-win!
2. Go here and scroll down to “The Pin It Button” for directions on adding the button to your bookmarks bar.
3. Go to “My Boards” and select either “Create a Board” or “Create a Secret Board.”
TIP: If you’re planning a wedding and you want to keep certain things under-wraps… like dress styles, favors for your guests or presents for your bridal party… choose Secret Board. That way, you can share the board only with the people directly involved with your wedding, and your ideas won’t be for public consumption until your big day.
4. Start pinning!! When you’re on a website and you see a photo you like, simply click that “Pin It” button you installed in step #2, and then select the board you want to pin it to. If you have collected images that you want to upload to your pinboard, click on the “+” next to your name in the top right corner of the Pinterest site, select “upload a pin,” and find your file.
Not Using Pinterest:
Not into Pinterest? That’s ok, we can work around it. Simply collect your images and either copy/paste them into a Word document… or even easier, just attach them in an email to me titled “My Inspiration Board” and we’ll go from there!
